Forty Massachusetts-based companies have earned the title of "Best Place to Work for LGBTQ Equality" this year, according to the latest Corporate Equality Index (CEI) report from the Washington-based Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation.

Some of the biggest tech names on that list: Akamai Technologies, Biogen, Nuance Communications and TripAdvisor.

In a new record for the HRC Foundation, more than 680 companies across the U.S. received that designation for their efforts in satisfying all of the CEI’s criteria results, earning them a 100 percent rating. Overall, the HRC Foundation rated 1,059 companies and law firms. It also unofficially rated 122 Fortune 500 companies that have yet to respond to an invitation to participate in the CEI survey.

The CEI rating criteria have three key pillars: (1) non-discrimination policies across business entities, (2) equitable benefits for LGBTQ workers and their families and (3) supporting an inclusive culture and corporate social responsibility.

In addition to big tech companies, Springfield-based MassMutual made the HRC Foundation's list. In August, the company told BostInno it has an active Pride Business Resource Group that offers financial seminars for LGBTQ couples. It also supported the "Yes on 3" campaign for transgender equality in November 2018, and it has made a number of concrete considerations for transgender employees, such as gender-affirming medical care coverage, gender-neutral bathrooms and a guide on supporting trans employees.

The LGBT Chamber of Commerce also told BostInno it has a number of partner companies it works with to implement inclusivity initiatives in their workplaces, including Harvard Pilgrim Health Care, Eastern Bank, PTC and Boston Scientific. All of those companies earned the "Best Place to Work for LGBTQ Equality" designation from the HRC Foundation with the exception of PTC, which came up just short with a 90 percent rating.

“These companies know that protecting their LGBTQ employees and customers from discrimination is not just the right thing to do—it is also the best business decision," HRC President Alphonso David said in a statement. "In addition, many of these leaders are also advocating for the LGBTQ community and equality under the law in the public square."
