Good news, you savvy urbanite, you: Compared with the beginning of January 2016, median one-bedroom rent prices in the Greater Boston area are actually down a whopping 5.9 percent.
According to Zumper's national rent report for January 2017, the median price for a one-bed in these parts is now $2,250 per year, down 5.9 percent compared to last January, while a two-bedroom apartment will cost you about $2,600, down 2.3 percent year over year.
That's good news. Though as a whole, Boston is still the third most expensive U.S. city for renters, behind only No. 1 San Francisco and New York City.
For a bit of perspective, here's what renters are facing out west in SF:
San Francisco, CA rents were up slightly, rising to $3,350 for a one bedroom and $4,510 for a two bedroom apartment, which marks increases of 0.6% and 0.2% respectively. However, as the year comes to an end, one bedroom rents are down 4% from where they were twelve months ago, providing Bay Area renters some reassurance going into 2017.
Also of note: Providence climbed two spots to become the nation's fourteenth most expensive rental market. So there's that.
