Editor's note: BostInno's State of Innovation, occurring on June 16, will bring together more than 1,000 business leaders and professionals for keynotes from high-profile speakers, cutting-edge panel discussions with industry leaders, engaging workshops and endless networking opportunities. This year, the forum will focus on defining what is required to fuel Boston's growth as a leader in innovation.
It is no longer just the summer months that cause gym goers to vacate the four walls of their fitness facilities. Slowly but surely workouts are popping up in more unique spaces and providing individuals — both weekend warriors and athletes alike — the opportunity to sweat it out.
From parks and plazas to offices and balconies, the traditional way in which we incorporate fitness into our daily lives is changing. And, in my opinion, it is definitely for the better.
Our Hub has recently seen a growth in the number of complimentary workouts — thank you warmer weather — as well as nontraditional spaces at which they're taking place. The Boston-based company MoveWith, previously named Be Gritzy, is leading this way with this innovative approach to fitness.
Consider this: You are able to take fitness classes from one of your favorite instructors, at a reasonable price, in a one-of-a-kind environment without any membership fees. Sounds ideal, right? Exactly.
MoveWith wants to connect talented fitness professionals with eager exercisers and place them in new and exciting locations. No more boring routine. MoveWith wants to spice up your sweat sessions.
I had the opportunity to speak with Cara Gilman, a yoga instructor for MoveWith, about why she enjoys teaching for the company and how it differs from practicing in a traditional gym or boutique studio. Gilman explained:
What I have loved about teaching in these unique spaces is how I can create fun events and classes based on where it is located and the type of space it is. It has made me more creative in proactively thinking about what I can offer my students that's a little different and goes along with where the space is located and what vibe the space creates.
The talented Lululemon ambassador went on to mention that the upcoming class she will be teaching in collaboration with MoveWith.
Next week I will be launching the summer edition of my RunYoga series. We will be practicing in the Ruggles Baptist Church in Fenway. Teaching near Fenway gives access to explore different neighborhoods in the city and therefore allows me to be more creative with the workouts/runs. The space itself inside the church is perfect for providing a nice chilled-out vinyasa yoga class post-run.
Aside from outdoor parks to penthouse roof decks, MoveWith has also brought fitness indoors to spaces such as WeWork. Providing cardio, strength and mind body classes for those of us with bustling desk-bound schedules, MoveWith makes creating healthy habits easier to achieve in everyday life.
So whether you're itching for a change of scenery or simply want to ditch the month-to-month gym membership, remember, fitness shouldn't be boring. And neither should the workout nor the space your sweating it out in.
