BostInno Approved: June's Top Tech & Startup Events in Boston



Brace yourselves. There are a lot of big tech and startup events coming your way in June. The Digital Factory, an event held by Formlabs and Desktop Metal, happens on June 5 while BostInno runs a three-day WorkXPlay series later in the month.

Just in case you might be a little cash-strapped this month, we put a double asterisk next to all of the free events. But if you're looking to burn a whole in your pocket (over $500 for one event, anyone?), we have you covered too.

Week 1

Thursday, June 1

Massachusetts Life Sciences Innovation Day: This event runs from 5 p.m. to 7 at the Harvard Club of Boston. The event includes keynotes, panels, an “innovators’ marketplace,” a poster competition and a networking reception. The event costs $80.

Boston Unity Group hosts June Demo Night from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 at Akamai’s Cambridge headquarters. The event is free.**

Friday, June 2

Crushing Your Marketing Game: BostonSpeaks host this event from 8 a.m. to 10 at Hatch Fenway. The speakers are Liz Maquette, head of marketing at HUBweek; Erin Rohr, account director at Metis Communications; and Jennelle McGrath, CEO at Market Veep. The event is free.**

Saturday, June 3

MIT Internet of Things Hackathon: This day-long event runs from 9:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the MIT Ray and Maria Stata Center. The event is free, though there is limited capacity.**

Week 2

Monday, June 5

The Digital Factory: Formlabs and Desktop Metal host this one-day event on digital manufacturing from 8 a.m. through 5:15 p.m. at the MIT Media Lab. Speakers include PTC CEO Jim Heppelmann, Founder Collective Managing Director Eric Paley, Stratasys President Scott Crump and Onshape CEO Jon Hirschtick. On-site registration costs $549.

Automated Machine Learning Meetup: Boston Machine Learning hosts this event at Amazon’s Cambridge office starting at 6:30 p.m. The speaker is Nicolo Fusi, a research scientist at Microsoft Research. The event is free.**

Tuesday, June 6

M&A and Successful Exits: Boston Entrepreneurs Network hosts this event from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 at Constant Contact’s Waltham office. Panelists include Kerri Salls of This Way Out Group, Peter Alternative of Mirus Capital Advisors and Christopher Crane of Vartopia. The event is free for members, $20 for non-members.

Boston TechBreakfast: This event runs from 8 a.m. to 9:30 at Red Thread’s Seaport office. The showcasing startups are Palatine Analytics, JustHuynh, IMMAD and Quantrix. The event is free.**

People Stack Apps + Things: Breather hosts this “micro-conference for tech managers” from 6 p.m. to 9 at its Congress Street office. The speakers are Dani Duggan, talent manager at Launch Academy; Rhiannon Chiacchiaro, director of marketing and documentation services at Deep Core Data; and Emil Sit, director of engineering at Toast. The event costs $25.

Draper Vision Night: Draper hosts this event from 6 p.m. to 8 at its Cambridge office on Hampshire Street. Presentation topics include vision-aided navigation systems, robotics and biometric processing. The event is free.**

Wednesday, June 7

District Hall Summer Café Night: This event runs from 5 p.m. to 9 at District Hall in the Seaport. Panel topics include renewables for all, how women can land themselves a speaking gig and sustainable urban living. The event is free.**

Snowflake Cloud Analytics City Tour: This event runs from 1:30 p.m. to 6 at the Westin Boston Waterfront. Speakers include Gordon Wong, director of business intelligence infrastructure at Fitbit; Michael Klos, engineering director of data platform at Localytics; and Adam Weinstein, executive director of analytics and data science at athenahealth. Thursday, June 8

Capital W—The Boston Women's Venture Summit: This event runs from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at District Hall. Speakers include Nilanjana Bhowmik, founder and general partner at Converge; Jan Bruce, CEO and co-founder at meQuilibrium; Jodi Goldstein, managing director of Harvard Innovation Lab; and Jody Rose, executive director of New England Venture Capital Association. The event costs $150.

Boston Built—Tech Showcase: Tech in Motion hosts this event from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 at Hatch Fenway. Presenters include Audible, Cogito, Freebird and iRobot. The event is free.**

Saturday, June 10

Black Girls Code Boston Chapter Presents We CREATE! A Parent-Daughter Circuits and IoT Workshop: This event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Facebook’s Cambridge office. The event costs $35 for students, who must register with a parent. Parents must pay $35. There’s also opportunities to sponsor a daughter and/or parent. Age range for students is 6-13.

Week 3

Monday, June 12

HackerNext Boston June Tech Social: This event runs from 6 p.m. to 9. The venue is to be determined. The event is free.**

Pledging with Purpose: TUGG hosts this event from 6:30 p.m. to 8:15 at MassChallenge's headquarters at 23 Dry Dock Ave. There will be presentations by local companies that are members of Pledge 1%, an organization encouraging companies to give 1 percent of their equity, employee time and products to good causes. The event is free.

Tuesday, June 13

PULSE Finale—A Digital Health Celebration: The PULSE@MassChallenge digital health accelerator hosts its inaugural finale event from 5 p.m. to 8 at The Wilbur Theater. The event will over $200,000 in prizes to participating PULSE startups. Speakers include Governor Charlie Baker and Vertex CEO Jeffrey Leiden. General admission costs $75.

Boston New Technology June Startup Showcase: This event runs from 6 p.m. to 9 at Foley Hoag’s Seaport office. Presenters are Franklin Robotics, ResearchSpace, The Lights out, Vinolytics, BizGifter, Tyme and xiQ. The event is free.**

Wednesday, June 14

Mass Innovation Nights—African-American Founder Showcase: This event runs from 6 p.m. to 8:30 at 575 Warren Street in Boston’s Grove Hall. The presenters are IncluDe, Unleashed, Pulse24/7, UZURI Health and Beauty, FABLabs for America, Quality Interactions, BeautyLynk, Donii, Doume, Black Girls Nutrition, MOON Selfie Light, Kids in Tech, dot Teach and Cede. The event is free.

MITX Data Summit: This day-long conference runs from 8:30 a.m. to 5 at Google Cambridge. Speakers include Will Ahmed, founder and CEO of WHOOP; Elyse Bogacz, design lead at Drift; and Alessandro Bambini, co-founder at Humon. Tickets cost $110 for members, $175 for non-members.

2017 Startup Spotlight: MIT Enterprise Forum hosts this event from 6 p.m. to 9 at Hatch Fenway. Participating startups include AskMolly, BeON Home, Blink, DropZone for Veterans, Franklin Robotics, Superpedestrian, VentureApp and Wasabi. The event costs $65 for members, $115 for non-members.

Thursday, June 15

Boston TechJam: This tech festival runs from 4 p.m. to 9 at Boston City Hall Plaza. The event includes live music, a chance to meet dozens of local tech companies, panels and more. Register here.

Insurtech Boston—A Celebration of Insurance Hustle: This event starts at 5 p.m. and runs through 7:30 at District Hall. Speakers include Quilt co-founder Jim Fini and Duck Creek Technologies Chief Digital Officer Curt Stevenson. Presenbting startups include Clearsurance, Embroker, InsuranceMenu and Pillar Technologies. Tickets cost $25.

Fuckup Nights Boston, Vol. 1: This event is dedicated to sharing stories of business failure, and it runs from 8:30 p.m. to 10 at WeWork at 625 Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge. Speakers to be announced. The event costs $5.

Life Sciences Global Pitch Fest: Swissnex Boston hosts this event on a boat at Boston Harbor Cruises from 5 p.m. to 9. Tickets range from $35 to $45.

Week 4

Monday, June 19

Soft Surfaces for Tangible/Wearable UIs: BostonCHI hosts this event from 6:30 p.m. to 9 at the IBM Center for Social Business in Cambridge. The speaker is Jürgen Steimle, a senior researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Informatics. The event is free.**

Tuesday, June 20

State of Innovation—WorkXPlay Mixer: Bostinno hosts this event from 6 p.m. to 9 at the Warehouse Bar & Grille in Boston, as part of a three-day WorkXPlay series. Admission for this event costs $15. For all three events, $40.

A MedTech Legend Shares Secrets to His Success: This event starts at 6 p.m. at the Cambridge Innovation Center at One Broadway. The speaker is Manny Villafańa, a serial entrepreneur who has through seven companies through IPOs. The event is free.**

Wednesday, June 21

State of Innovation—WorkXPlay Smarter Workplaces: BostInno hosts this event from 6 p.m. to 8:30 at Convene’s One Boston Place office, as part of a three-day WorkXPlay series. The panelists are Chris Kelley, co-founder and chief development officer at Convene; Stefania Mallett, co-founder and CEO of ezCater; Michael Affronti, VP of product at Fuze; and David McFarlane, president and COO at Litmus. The event costs $15. The three events together cost $40.

What It’s Really Like to be Out at Work: HubSpot hosts this LGBTQ+ event from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at its 2 Canal Park office in Cambridge. The speakers are Jessica Halem, LGBTQ program director at Harvard Medical School; Maria Centeio, senior inbound consultant at HubSpot; Sherry Cheuk, product manager at athenahealth; H. State of Innovation—WorkXPlay Scaling Up: BostInno hosts this event from 6 p.m. to 8:30 at 100 Summer St., as part of a three-day WorkXPlay series. The panelists are Jennifer Lum, co-founder and COO of Forge.AI; Larry Begley, CFO of CloudHealth Technologies; and Nilanjana Bhowmik, founder and general partner at Converge. The event costs $15. How Can AR + VR Be Used? Inphantry hosts this event from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 at its South Street office. Tuesday, June 27

Boston Innovators Group—Voice Computing: NextView Ventures hosts this event starting at 6:30 p.m. at District Hall. The main presenters are Mylestone CEO Dave Balter and LifePod CEO Stu Patterson. Panelists include Joel Evans, co-founder of Mobiquity; and Chris Lamb, mobile products at InterContinental Hotel Groups. The event is free, except for service providers (they have to pay $28). **

Mobile Tea #17—Mobile Shake: This mobile development event runs from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 at the Museum of Science. Speaker topics include traffic sign classification and user experience within the smart home. The event is free.**

Tech Networking & Gaming Night—Player 1/Player 2: Asylum Gaming and Esports hosts this event from 7 p.m. to 9 at Laugh Boston. The event costs $5, which includes one drink, appetizers and free games.
