BostInno Approved: May's Top Tech & Startup Events in Boston

According to the Founders Institute, we have ideal startup temperament. Based on my time here at BostInno, I agree. But my dear readers, I dare you to find out yourself in one of this month's top tech events, ranging from startup workshops to app building seminars...to tequila and tech events by yours truly.

(Just a reminder, we keep updating this list throughout the month as events get scheduled, so make sure to check back, or subscribe to the Beat if you want a daily heads up on our writer's event of choice).

Week 1: May 1 - May 7

Monday, May 1

Pitch As Performance: How Music Can Teach Us How To Pitch Great Ideas: From 6:00 p.m. to 8, entrepreneurs and musicians are invited to visit The Loft at Berklee for an interactive pitch event. Learn how to make a great pitch by analyzing performances, and get tips from experienced entrepreneurs. There's pizza, and it's free to attend.

Tuesday, May 2

When Engineering Meets Healthcare: Open Innovation Club hosts a panel on the future of engineering in the healthcare industry, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 at WorkBar Cambridge. There will also be a pitch session featuring 12 startups, such as Bioinformatix and Rythm. Tickets are $20 if you register online, and are $30 at the door.

The Future of Talent: Employer Branding: Come meet talent acquisition professionals to hear how to attract the best and brightest of Boston's tech talent. Companies in attendance will learn how to create effective branding for the company culture. This event, hosted by General Assembly and MassTLC, is free.

Wednesday, May 3

BostInno De Mayo: If life gives you lemons, join BostInno because we'll give you tequila. The annual celebration, held at Tia's, is the perfect chance to network with Boston's tech community and celebrate the beginning of spring. Heads up, the event is 21+. Skip the siesta and join the fiesta for only $25.

What's Real about Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality?: This "deep dive into the AR/VR ecosystem" will teach individuals about the current state of the industry, as well as existing opportunities. Panelists from Microsoft, Accomplice VC, Google VR and more will be sharing their insights. The event is held at MIT Enterprise Forum of Cambridge from 5:30 p.m. to 8. It's free for students, and ticket prices range from $2o  to $45.

Open Data Science Conference: Held from May 3 to May 5, this conference will cover the latest in AI and data science news through over 20 workshops, 130 speakers, and a presumed 4,500 attendees. The keynote will be from Jeremy Achin, DataRobot's CEO. The event will be held at Hynes Convention Center and tickets range from $499 to $1999.

BREAKTHROUGH: Women's Entrepreneurship Pitch Competition: Hosted by Women Innovating Now (WIN) through Babson College, this pitch competition was created to celebrate and reward women entrepreneurship with cash prizes. There is wine, and proceeds from the event go to WIN lab. Tickets are $20.

Thursday, May 4

EnergyBar! 2017: Greentown Labs will host a cleantech networking session in its Somerville office, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30. Those interested in energy-related companies are invited to come shake hands, and learn about existing opportunities in Boston. It's free to attend.

Design Night: Build It!: Experience design, making and the future of building in this interactive info session, from 6:00 p.m. to 10, at the Autodesk BUILD Space in Boston's Seaport. Sip craft beers and learn from top creative directors on the direction of the building industry. Tickets range from $20 to $25.

Friday, May 5

Localytics is hosting it's Free Beer Friday event in Cinco de Mayo fashion! Stop by its HQ  from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 to drink and celebrate with Boston's startup community. It is free to attend, just make sure to RSVP.

Week 2: May 8 - May 14

Monday, May 8

Startupalooza + Free Capital Raising Workshop: From 3:30 p.m. to 9, come to Cambridge Innovation Center for an open pitching session and VC informational event. Individuals are invited to pitch diverse ideas, whether it be from the healthcare industry or digital media industry. Tickets range from $15 to $255.

Tuesday, May 9

CX in the Age of Innovation: The Convergence of Digital and Physical: Hosted by Ascent Venture Partners, this event will cover the changing customer experience landscape and invitation happening in the enterprise technology. The event is held at the Microsoft NERD Center in Cambridge starting at 6 p.m., and you can register here.

What to Know about Outsourcing to Fuel Startup and Small Business Growth: Learn how to work with outsourced partners and optimize your business' potential in this panel discussion, held at Canopy's co-working space in Somerville, from 6:00 p.m. to 8.  It's free to attend.

Thursday, May 11

Launch Academy Boston: Open House: Learn about Launch Academy's 10-week boot camp from alumni and professionals from 6:00 p.m. to 9. The event is held at Launch Academy HQ on 77 Summer St. The event is free.

Xconomy's EXOME Presents: What's Hot in Boston Biotech: Boston's top biotech entrepreneurs and investors will come together in this interactive event held at Biogen. Innovators will be speaking on the future of the life sciences industry from 1:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Tickets range from $50 to $425.

Week 3: May 15 - May 21

Monday, May 15

OpenSec 2017: Hear from Boston's open-source security community at Hatch Fenway, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Attendees will learn about opportunities in the cyberspace ecosystem and the future of the industry. Student entry is free, and tickets for the general public are $18.01.

Tuesday, May 16

MedTech Boston 40 under 40 Awards: From 6:00 p.m. to 8, join MedTech Boston and Pulse@MassChallenge to celebrate the brightest minds in healthcare. This event will showcase entrepreneurs ranging from students to policy makers, and tickets are $19.95.

Wednesday, May 17

MIT $100K Entrepreneurship Competition: MIT's Launch Finale, featuring 8 innovative startups competing for $100,000 in funding, will begin at 7 p.m. at 48 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge. There will be over 1,200 students, teachers and innovators in attendance, so make sure to reserve a spot and get your network on. It is free to attend.

New England Venture Capital Association is hosting its 2017 NEVY awards, recognizing New England's most innovative and driven minds. With an open bar and a night themed around "cajun spice and bayou charm," the celebration will run from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30. It will be held at House of Blues Boston, and ticket packets range from $130 to $1,120.

Thursday, May 18 

Haymakers for Hope: Come watch our community fight for a cure (literally) through a charity boxing match. This "knockout for cancer" will, featuring one of our very own GM, Kyle Gross. Inspired? Donate here. Want to watch? Tickets range from $85 (GA) to $600 (Ringside).

Pitch It: A Startup Showcase: Startup Stir is bringing together the CEO of Boloco and former COO of PayPal in a pitch event, where attendees will see 10 startups pitch for prizes and press from 6:30 p.m. to 8, at 100 High St., Boston, MA. Tickets range from $10 to $15.

Founders Diaries with the Founder and CEO of LogMeIn, Michael Simon: Stop by WeWork St. James at 6 p.m. for F-Prime Capital's latest Founders Diaries event. It is free to attend.

Week 4: May 22 - May 31

Monday, May 22

Inclusive Innovation Conference: This inaugural conference, held at Westin Boston Waterfront, invites minorities in the innovation industry to learn, inspire and connect. The conference will host industry professionals, from founders to engineers, to mobilize the future of the business industry. Tickets range from $40 to $2,990.

Tuesday, May 23

Formlabs is hosting a recruiters meetup where Boston tech experts can mingle, connect and learn about each other's career paths. Learn more about how to grow and harness talent in the city in this free event, held at Formlabs HQ in Somerville, MA. It is free to attend.

Girls Develop It Boston will be hosting an introduction to E26 with JavasScript class. The class will feature hands-on coding, as well as a review of the features of E26 syntax. It will be held at HubSpot HQ, and tickets are $90.

Shoobx Startup Series - Building a Winning Team: Stop by C Space, at 290 Congress St., Boston, to learn how to build a team of passionate and personable hard workers. Diane Hessan, formerly the CEO Startup Institute and a current chairman of C Space,  will be one of the featured panelists tackling these issues. It is free to attend.

Running a Successful SaaS PMO: Using Metrics to Drive Results: Bullhorn hosts this event from 6 p.m. to 8 at its 100 Summer St. office in Boston. The speaker is Brendan Robinson, PMO director at Bullhorn. The event is free.

Wednesday, May 24

Success Stories and Strategies for International & Immigrant Entrepreneurs: From 4 p.m. to 8, the Venture Development Center at UMass Boston will host an event for international entrepreneurs looking to launch innovative startups. Come learn about their Global Entrepreneur in Residence program, through panels and networking. It's free to attend.

Thursday, May 25

Through the Looking Glass with Virtual and Augmented Reality: Stop by Cambridge Innovation Center's Venture Cafe from 5:30 p.m. to 8, to hear about businesses involved with AR/VR. Touch upon augmented reality's intersection with art, entertainment and training in this free event.

Growing Pains: Hacking Your Hiring Hurdles: Workable hosts this panel on rapid growth and hiring from 6 p.m. to 8 at WeWork South Station. The panelists are Becky McCullough, director of North American recruiting at HubSpot; Eric Tricketts, director of talent acquisition at Wayfair; Marcus Tgettis, VP of global talent strategy at Rapid7; and Elaine Pappas, VP of talent growth at Kinvey. The event is free.
