BostInno Approved: The Week's Top Tech & Startup Events in Boston



In between celebrating the Patriots win and boycotting Atlanta's arguably great beer, it's probably a good idea to take a breather and change out of that Free Brady t-shirt. We invite you to change into something... fresher and attend some of the week's BostInno Approved events.

Monday, February 6

Tech Ladies Boston and Lovepop are hosting a Boston Happy Hour for those interested in tech and innovation (so basically, everyone reading this). While it’s hosted by Tech Ladies, all genders are welcome to attend this 2017 kickoff for those involved in the STEM field. It is being held at Lovepop's Boston headquarters and runs from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30. Space is limited, so grab your seat quick. Tickets are $10.

Tech Sandbox is hosting Lisa Ludwig, a marketing expert, at its Hopkinton office as part of its Experts on Site series. Ludwig has worked with both startups and Fortune 500 companies and is here to give the Boston tech community some free advice. Startup leaders or startup hopefuls are invited to sign up for one-on-one sessions with Ludwig, which begin at 2 p.m.  The event is free, but you must RSVP  (do I get points for rhyming?).

Coding for Beginners in JavaScript (Take 3): This class is hosted by First Step Coding and Manual at WorkBar Boston. Geared toward beginners, the class will cover introductory information on HTML, CSS and JavaScript. It runs from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30. By the end of it, you’ll be able to make your own virtual dice. This event is free.

Tuesday, February 7

VR/AR Association hosts the official launch of its Boston chapter at Wayfair's Boston headquarters, from 6 p.m. to 8. In case you don’t know- VRARA is a global association for Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and Mixed Reality. Build your network with local leaders of the AR and VR industries, while enjoying provided drinks and food. The event is free for members, and it is $20 for non-members.

Boston TechBreakfast is hosting its monthly meet-up for techies and entrepreneurs at 8 a.m. at the Microsoft NERD Center. Yes, coffee and food will be provided. Speakers include Ronnie Deaver from Peddlir, Conrad Holloman from Operation Code, Nick Gauthier from MeetSpace, and Gavin Bauman from Microsoft HoloLens. This event is free.

Tech Careers for Non-Engineers: General Assembly hosts this free event from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 at its downtown space. The conversation leans toward those thinking about shifting to tech careers, specifically in sales, marketing and product management. The panelist is Nathaniel Lane, a design lead at PTC with experience in AR and VR. The event is free.

MassRobotics is having a launch event for its latest project: Robotics Evolution and Development Initiative (READI). The event, held at MassRobotics headquarters in Boston, will include a session of networking, some comments about the state of robotics in Massachusetts, and a conversation about the future of robotics by MassRobotics Executive Director Tom Ryden. It runs from 5:30 p.m to 8 p.m. and the event is free.

Wednesday, February 8

February Meet-up: Fintech for Social Good: Boston FinTech is hosting this event from 6 p.m. to 8 at ImpactHub's Boston space. The panel discussion includes George Overholser, a co-founder of Third Sector Capital Partners; Asad Ramzanal, senior manager at the Center for Financial Services Innovation; and Ty Griffin, the founder of Prism Money. The conversation will be moderated by Jay Farber of F-Prime Capital. Network with other members of the FinTech community, who are innovating and positively impacting society. it is free to attend.

Commercializing Innovation: This event features Katrine Bosley, the CEO of Editas Medicine, and is hosted by the Harvard Office of Technology Development and Harvard Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The talk will be from 4 p.m. to 5, and is open to those interested in scientific entrepreneurship. This event is free.

 BNPy: Bayesian Nonparametric clustering with Python: Hosted by Boston Bayesians, this event is held at Acquia's headquarters in downtown Boston and begins at 6 p.m. Mike Hughes, a postdoctoral researcher at Harvard University, will be the speaker. This event is free, but register ahead of time to avoid lines.

2017 MITX eCommerce Summit: Accelerating Commerce: This annual eCommerce summit goes from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The expert line-up includes Jake Bailey of Wish, Wombi Rose of Lovepop, Sanchan S. Saxena of New Experiences and Instagram, and Brendan Witcher of Forrester Research. The summit, held at PwC's Seaport office, includes breaks for networking, roundtable discussions, and even dedicated time for “Commerce and Cocktails.” The event is $125 for members, and $195 for non-members. 

Thursday, February 9

React: Leveled Up: Boston ReactJS is hosting a free meetup for web developers and those interested in React-related topics. The event, held at Launch Academy, begins at 6:30 p.m. The event is free.

Network After Work: Professionals and entrepreneurs alike are invited to come to Harborside Inn from 6 p.m. to 8 for informal networking. Name badges are color-coded by industry, so you’ll know exactly who you should be talking to. Tickets are $15.

Designing for Health: Healthcare meets innovation during this event, hosted by Designers + Geeks. It is at EF Education First's headquarters in Cambridge. Colin Raney, CMO at PillPack, will be sharing tips from his experience in design, innovation and healthcare. It runs from 7:00 p.m. to 9. Early bird tickets have already sold out, so grab your general admission tickets for $20.

Friday, February 10

Meet + Greet: African Executive and Investors: This event, hosted by CEIBS and Harvard University, brings executives and investors from Africa to the Boston start-up community. Sectors such as energy, financial services, and healthcare will be represented. It runs from 11:00 a.m. to 1 p.m. at CIC Boston. The event is open to the public, and free.

TechConnect 2017: Hosted by Boston University’s Questrom School of Business MS-MBA Association and the Entrepreneurship club, TechConnect 2017 is focused on covering Fringe Technology. This event includes a morning keynote from James Ross of GE Digital, a debate on online dating, and a panel on virtual reality. It is held at Boston University's Questrom School of Business, and runs from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.Tickets include lunch, and are $5 for BU students, and $20 for the general public.

Women & Entrepreneurship: ‘Go Against The Flow’ Screening & Discussion: This free event is hosted by The Capital Network and She Starts, and runs from 8:30 a.m. to 11 at Cooley LLP. There will first be a screening of documentary “Go Against The Flow,” followed by a roundtable discussion with some of Boston’s best female entrepreneurs. It is free to attend.

Wine, Cheese, & Biotech: Coté Orphan Open House in Boston: This free event, which runs from 3:00 p.m. to 6. Attendees will have the opportunity to network with local biotech companies and orphan drug space partners. Timothy R. Cote, the principal and CEO of Coté Orphan, will be the main speaker. The event is free.
