VC funding update: Which Boston-area startups raised money in October?

Biotech companies were the big hitters in October, bringing in a total of over $500 million in venture capital funding, by our count. Last month, they raised $282.5 million. Greentech and software companies were next in the ranking with $150.2 million and $99.75 million, respectively. In total, Boston-area companies raised about $845 million this month. That’s up from September, when companies raised $729.35 million, but still down from August’s  $954.1 million raise total.

Greentech
  • Boston-based AM Batteries closed a $25 million Series A round led by Anzu Partners to scale up its lithium-ion dry electrode technology. 
  • Somerville-based Raise Green announced the close of its $1.2 million seed round. The startup is based out of Greentown Labs and wants to help solar projects and climate tech companies secure funding. 
  • Seed gene-editing company Inari has raised $124 million in a Series E round. The Cambridge company’s funding now totals $475 million.
Healthtech/Medtech
  • IUDs are one of the most effective forms of birth control, but the insertion and removal process can be painful. 3Daughters wants to replace the outdated, T-shaped IUDs with its new magnetic, frameless IUD. This month, the startup closed an early-stage round of just over $1 million to push its work forward. 
  • Cambridge-based Quantori, which provides IT, AI and machine learning products for life science and health care companies, raised a $15 million seed round. The funding was led by Boston-based Flint Capital.
  • Folx Health, an LGBTQ health care service provider, has raised $30 million in Series B funding. 
  • Rhino Health extended its seed round by $6.7 million, bringing its total funding to $11.7M. The Boston company helps health care AI developers and medical researchers access datasets and use them to create AI algorithms.
  • Boston-based Vincere Health said it has raised $1.75 million in a customer-led strategic funding round. The startup’s health platform helps smokers and vapers.
Software
  • Boston cybersecurity startup Perygee closed a $4.75 million seed investment led by Ballistic Ventures. Cybersecurity angels Ray Rothrock, John Donovan, Ohad Finkelstein, Corey Thomas and Bryson Bort also participated in the round. 
  • PreVeil, a provider of cloud-based, end-to-end encrypted email and file collaboration tools, has raised $20 million in Series C funding round led by PSG. The Boston company said its customers include aerospace and defense companies and universities that need to protect sensitive data.
  • Breezeway, a Boston hospitality technology startup, raised $15 million led by Catalyst Investors. The company said its new funding would be used for its operations management tools and guest experience platform.
  • Oort, a Boston cybersecurity company, announced a $15 million raise between its seed and Series A rounds. The funding round was co-led by .406 Ventures, a Boston-based, early-stage venture capital firm specializing in cybersecurity.
  • ShipIn Systems closed a $24 million Series A round. Zeev Ventures, a Silicon Valley venture capital firm, led the round. The Newton company uses AI and visual analytics to provide fleet management services for vessels like container ships, tankers and car carriers.  
  • Connectbase is cataloging the world's networks with location data to create a central marketplace that streamlines connectivity buying and selling. The company announced a $21 million Series C round this month to expand global connectivity. 
Biotech 
  • Normunity Inc., a biotechnology company creating anti-cancer immunotherapies, announced its launch and Series A financing of $65 million.
  • Natick-based PIC Therapeutics Inc., a biopharma company developing medicines for patients with cancer, closed a $35 million Series A financing led by OrbiMed.
  • Boston neurotechnology startup Axoft launched today with $8 million in seed funding led by The Engine. The company also announced FDA breakthrough device designation for its neural implants to better treat neurological disorders. 
  • Serial entrepreneur Gary Glick has been busy in the last 10 months since launching immuno-oncology startup Odyssey Therapeutics. The company recently disclosed another $168 million in the form of a Series B round, this time led by General Catalyst.
  • A year after emerging from stealth with what would ultimately be the fifth-largest fundraise among local life sciences companies in 2021, Neumora Therapeutics has raised another $112 million to propel its neuropsychiatric drugs forward. 
  • Cellarity, the Flagship Pioneering startup that has publicly declared a mission of eradicating 'all diseases,' has raised another large funding round. The company brought in $121 million as it makes headway on two disease areas in particular, blood and metabolic disorders.
Sports tech
  • Vanta, a Boston-based esports organization for K-12 students, raised $2.5 million, bringing its total funding to over $3.3 million. 
Consumer goods
  • 2022 Fire Award honoree Metalenz Inc. has brought in nearly $29 million in new equity funding, according to an SEC filing. 
Funds
  • The climate-tech firm Propeller announced its inaugural $100 million fund. The fund, led by the likes of HubSpot co-founder Brian Halligan and climate scientist and oceanographer Julie Pullen, will support founders addressing the climate crisis. The firm is also partnering with the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.
