VC funding update: Which Boston-area startups raised money in September?

Realtime Robotics secured $14.4 million in new funding led by Soundproof Ventures, Heroic Ventures and SIP Global Partners.

Funding was slightly down in September compared to August, with startups bringing in around $729.35 million this month compared to $954.1 million in August.

Biotech and software were neck-and-neck compared to previous months, raising $282.5 million and $212.7 million, respectively. 

September also saw the return of the elusive unicorn. Wasabi Technologies was the first Boston company to put its valuation over $1 billion since July.

Biotech  

WhiteLab Genomics has raised a $10 million round to help fund its expansion to the U.S. The Paris, France-based company is developing an AI-powered predictive software simulation platform for the design of gene and cell therapies. It is in the process of establishing its U.S. operations in Cambridge. 

News from Nimbus Therapeutics has been slim in the last few years. This month the company disclosed a $125 million financing round with new investment from Bain Capital Life Sciences and SV Health Investors. Since selling a liver disease drug to Gilead Sciences in 2016, Nimbus has shifted its focus to autoimmune disease drugs.

Photys Therapeutics launched with $75 million in Series A funding led by MPM Capital with participation from investors like Longwood, Mass General Brigham Ventures and Merck & Co.'s venture arm. 

Pretzel Therapeutics emerged from stealth with $72.5 million from investors including Arch Ventures and GV (formerly Google Ventures).

Software

Founded by three MIT athletes, Cambridge-based Perch uses computer vision and machine learning algorithms to monitor an athlete’s movements during exercise in the gym. The startup recently raised a $4 million round from such investors as Bradley Bloom, Ledgeways Ventures LLC and Byron Jones, who plays cornerback for the Miami Dolphins.

Cambridge-based Sense, a home energy intelligence company, closed a $127.6 million Series C financing with Volery Capital Partners joining Blue Earth Capital, MCJ Collective, Schneider Electric, iRobot and others as investors. 

Tidelift announced that new investments from AEI HorizonX and Cisco Investments extended its Series C financing by $6.5 million to a total of $33.5 million. The Boston company provides solutions for improving open source software supply chain resilience.

ClearMotion announced a $39 million financing led by NIO Capital. The company spun out of MIT and is developing active suspension and proactive road sensing software to mitigate vehicle movement across uneven road surfaces. 

Fairmarkit, a Boston company developing an automated sourcing platform, raised a $35.6 million Series C investment.

Healthtech/Medtech

Bicycle Health raised a $50 million Series B round. The Boston-based company offers virtual opioid addiction treatment.

AOA Dx Inc. is developing a diagnostic blood test for ovarian cancer. This month it closed a $7 million seed round to bring its tech to the market. Co-founder Oriana Papin-Zoghbi said this diagnostic could also help detect ovarian cancer at stage one or two. Early detection of ovarian cancer leads to much higher survival rates.

Fintech

Boston-based Boundless Rider Insurance Agency LLC closed $4.75 million in seed funding. The startup aims to provide insurance for riders of motorcycles, e-bikes, ATVs, UTVs and snowmobiles and launch a smartphone app with features and benefits for riders

IT

Wasabi Technologies Inc. has become Boston's latest unicorn after raising $125 million in a Series D round led by L2 Point Management. The Boston-based company also announced the expansion of its debt facility with MGG Investment Group by $125 million. Wasabi said the $250 million in new funding puts its valuation over $1.1 billion. 

Greentech

Water tech company ZwitterCo Inc. raised a $33 million Series A round. The company, which spun out of Tufts University, is developing long-lasting membranes for wastewater separation made from what it calls “zwitterionic copolymers.”

Robotics

Realtime Robotics, the 2022 Inno Madness champion, has secured $14.4 million in new funding led by Soundproof Ventures, Heroic Ventures and SIP Global Partners. 

Funds

The Boston-based firm closed an oversubscribed $158 million Fund II, said Rudina Seseri, a founder and managing partner. Glasswing Ventures said this fund will be used to invest in AI-enabled enterprise and security startups at the seed stage and pre-seed companies working on frontier technologies. 

Building Ventures Inc. has announced the close of its $95 million Fund II. The firm, which now operates with four team members in Boston and two in the Bay Area, is also "actively recruiting" for two more analysts ideally based in Greater Boston, according to Heather Widman, partner at the firm.

OpenView Venture Partners told the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission it has raised about $517 million in the first tranche of a $800 million fundraise for its seventh fund.
