VC Funding Update: 48 Startups Raise Over $1 Billion in February

The financial year has just begun, and Beantown startups are already raising multi-million- dollar rounds.

Chief among these were Toast's $400 million Series F round, DigitalOcean's $300 million debt financing, Iora Health's $126 million Series F and Flywire's $120 million Series E. Local HR startup Globalization Partners also closed on a $150 million minority equity investment

Local VC firms also raised significant capital: Boston- and San Francisco-based tech-focused investment firm Battery Ventures closed two new funds worth a combined $2 billion to continue backing innovative technology companies worldwide in a variety of sectors.

Venture and growth stage investment firm M33 Growth raised a $260 million fund and is planning to make both minority and majority investments in eight to 10 companies. Meanwhile, Vestigo Ventures, a Cambridge-based venture capital firm specializing in financial services technology, is raising money for its second-ever fund, with a goal of bringing in $100 million. Cambridge-based Rhapsody Venture Partners also raised $40.7 million for a new fund, according to an SEC filing.

Legacy, the Boston startup working to reimagine fertility through human sperm cryobanking raised $3.5 million.

The visual vocabulary tool InferCabulary was awarded $25,000 in Google credit at last week’s LearnLaunch 2020 pitch competition.

Boston-based HR startup Globalization Partners closed on a $150 million minority equity investment led by Wincove Private Holdings and TDR Capital with participation from Sands Capital.

In-space propulsion pioneer Accion Systems raised $11 million in Series B funding, co-led by Boeing HorizonX Ventures and Shasta Ventures.

Boston-based Digital Onboarding raised $3 million in equity, according to an SEC filing.

Lexington-based mPharma Data, a drug benefits and inventory manager for insurers and providers, raised $13.2 million in equity in a $21.5 million funding round, according to an SEC filing.

Aiven, a Finnish startup whose U.S. headquarters is in Boston, has raised $40 million in a Series B round. The company’s goal is to combine open-source technologies with cloud infrastructure.

Plannuh, a Boston startup behind an AI-enabled, permissions-based platform for marketing teams, has brought in a $4 million seed round co-led by Glasswing Ventures and Google’s AI-focused Gradient Ventures fund.

Boston-based healthtech startup 1UpHealth raised $8 million in a fresh round of funding, according to SEC filing.

Masabi, the startup that provides fare collection infrastructure to a number of public transit agencies across the world, including the MBTAreceived an investment of an undisclosed amount from Shell to accelerate deployments of its Justride platform.

Swoop, a Cambridge-based health data startup that uses AI and machine learning to help biotech and pharma companies, raised $3 million in debt, according to an SEC filing.

Cambridge-based Rgenta Therapeutics raised $6 million in equity in a $20 million funding round, according to an SEC filing.

SaaSWorks, a Boston-based company that delivers operational solutions for scaling SaaS businesses, raised $5 million led by Conversion Venture Capital with participation from unnamed SaaS CEOs, CFOs and executives.

Boston-based WindESCo, a software startup that helps make wind farms more efficient, raised $5.3 million in equity in a $10.3 million funding round, according to an SEC filing.

Brookline-based biotech Torus Biosystems raised $1.5 million in equity, according to an SEC filing.

Boston-based Iora Health, a company that aims to reinvent primary care through its own primary care practices, raised $126 million in a Series F funding round. The investment was led by India-based Premji Invest, the investment group of Wipro Ltd chairman Azim Premji, and existing investors Cox Enterprises, Temasek Holdings, F-Prime Capital, Devonshire Investors, .406 Ventures, Flare Capital Partners, Polaris Partners and Khosla Ventures participated.

Cancer startup Trillium raised $117 million in an oversubscribed fundraising, surpassing its initial $75 million goal. For the first time in nearly a year, the company’s stock began trading above $1 per share, removing the threat it will be delisted from Nasdaq.

Just over a year after emerging from stealth with $5 million in Series A funding, artificial intelligence and machine learning startup Carbon Relay brought in a $63 million equity investment from Insight Partners.

The Organic Project (TOP), a Duxbury-based period product startup, closed a $900,000 seed round. The round was led by Maroon Venture Partners Fund, a for-profit venture fund that invests in early-stage companies linked to the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Several angel investors also participated in the round. 

Wearable device startup Flare closed a $3 million seed round led by Lerer Hippeau, with participation from Ludlow Ventures, Able, the Graduate Syndicate, Underscore, Bolt and others. 

Marlborough-based Communication Technology Services, a U.S. provider of wireless infrastructure services, received an equity investment of an undisclosed amount from Astra Partners I.

Boston-based Nido Surgical, a medical device company developing an innovative solution for epicardial ablation of ventricular tachycardia, raised $400,000 in incremental cash, bringing its debt round to $2.9 million.

The nonprofit Entrepreneurship for All (EforAll) received a $60,000 grant from Santander Bank to support programs in Lowell-Lawrence (including the Spanish-language program in Lawrence, EparaTodos), Holyoke and Roxbury.

Architect.io, a Boston-based cloud startup, emerged from stealth mode with a $1.5 million pre-seed round. The round was co-led by NextGen Venture Partners, owned by investment giant Brown Advisory, and Comcast Ventures, the venture investing arm of Comcast. The startup has four full-time employees based near South Station.

Burlington-based agtech company Agrify raised $7 million in equity, according to an SEC filing.

Freight Farms, the Boston startup that builds automated farm systems in shipping containers raised $15 million in a Series B round led by New York City-based Ospraie Ag Science, which invests in agtech companies. Existing investor Spark Capital also participated in the round, which brings the company’s total funding to more than $28 million.

Boston-based payment processing company Flywire raised $120 million in a Series E round led by Goldman Sachs, with participation from existing investors including Temasek Holdings. Tiger Management and Adage Capital Management joined the round as new investors. 

Boston-based appraisal software company Reggora raised $10 million in Series A funding. The round was led by Spark Capital; existing investors, including Boston Seed Capital, also participated.

Pet-related software developer Babel Bark raised an additional $555,000 in incremental cash, according to an SEC filing.

Boston-based Square Robot closed both its Series A and Series B rounds, bringing its total venture funding to $13 million. 

Merryfield, a Boston-based new clean label rewards app, closed a $3.5 million seed funding round from management team members and angel investors.

Toast, the Boston-based restaurant payments startup, raised a whopping $400 million in Series F funding. The round was led by Bessemer Venture Partners, TPG, Greenoaks Capital and Tiger Global Management, with participation from Durable Capital Partners LP, TCV, funds and accounts advised by T. Rowe Price Associates, G Squared, Light Street Capital, Alta Park Capital and others.

CARB-X, the Boston-based fund that gives grants to companies fighting antibiotic resistance, awarded Cambridge biotech Lytica Therapeutics up to $5.3 million in non-dilutive funding to develop antibacterial peptides with broad activity against multidrug-resistant bacteria.

Cambridge-based Modo Labs, the startup behind a platform allowing users to create workplace or university mobile apps, raised $5 million in equity, according to an SEC filing.

Cambridge-based precision medicine company Q-State Biosciences raised $21.2 million in equity in a $41.2 million funding round, according to an SEC filing.

Cambridge-based enterprise intelligence startup Keeeb raised $7 million in equity in a $10 million funding round, according to an SEC filing.

Waltham-based Scipher Medicine, a developer of a molecular technology platform used to ensure patients are prescribed the most effective therapy, announced an investment from Optum Ventures, the independent venture fund of Optum.  

IntelyCare, a Quincy-based startup with an app that lets users hire on-demand respite care professionals for loved ones, raised $45 million in debt and equity in a Series B round. The round was led by new investor Endeavour Vision with Kaiser Permanente Ventures and Generator Ventures participating. The new financing brings the company’s total venture funding to $59 million.

EnClear Therapies, a Cambridge-based life sciences company developing device-based therapies for the treatment of neurodegenerative disease, raised $10 million in Series A financing. The round was led by 20/20 HealthCare Partners with participation from Peter Thiel, Amgen Ventures, GHS Fund (Quark Venture LP and GF Securities), Christian Angermayer’s Presight Capital and Dolby Ventures.

Teikametrics, a SaaS provider of AI-powered optimization for brands and sellers on Amazon and Walmart, completed a $15 million strategic funding round backed by new and existing investors.

Revere-based Upshot Technologies raised $1 million in equity in a $1.3 million funding round, according to an SEC filing. 

Visionairy Health, the Harvard i-lab startup that develops an automated chest x-ray screening solution to reduce radiologists’ workload and increase their efficiency, raised $550K in equity, according to an SEC filing.

Woburn-based Nantero, a nanotechnology company developing next-generation memory using carbon nanotubes, raised $3.9 million in debt in a $15 million funding round, according to an SEC filing.

DigitalOcean, a New York City- and Cambridge-based provider of a cloud platform to deploy, manage, and scale applications of any size, closed on a $300 million bank debt financing.

Invetx, a new startup developing antibody treatments specifically for animals, launched with $15 million in Series A funding from Boston-based investor Anterra Capital and WuXi Biologics. Invetx is looking into treatments for osteoarthritis pain, allergies and cancer in dogs, cats and horses.

Everbridge, a critical event management firm headquartered in Burlington, raised $8.6 million in equity, according to an SEC filing.

Sudbury-based Access to Recovery received $2.7 million in funding in the Massachusetts state budget to enhance and expand its opioid response program and provide housing subsidies to participants for sober housing as part of a new Sober Home Pilot Project.

LinkSquares, a Boston-based provider of AI-powered legal contract analytics, raised $14.5 million in Series A financing led by Jump Capital. New investor First Ascent Ventures and existing investors MassMutual Ventures and Hyperplane Venture Capital also participated. 

Boston-based Acoustic Wells, an IoT startup for use in drilling wells and a participant in last year's MIT delta v accelerator, raised $2.2 million in a $3 million funding round, according to an SEC filing.

Boston-based autonomous vehicles developer NextDroid raised $3 million in equity in a $4.9 million funding round, according to an SEC filing.
