A California-based surgical solutions company is scaling its model nationally after finding success in Birmingham’s health care ecosystem.

Informed+ Surgical launched its surgeons of excellence model in Birmingham and, following its success, will soon be expanding it to 10 major markets over the next six months.

Based in Los Gatos, California, Informed+ Surgical aims to provide solutions to the $200 billion U.S. problem with complications regarding high-volume surgeries.

Its approach includes integrating its platform with employers' existing health care benefits to improve employee care and using data from the Da Vinci surgical robotic device to ensure patients have access to the best surgeons, ultimately enhancing health care outcomes and reducing costs.

The markets Informed+ is planning to expand its model into include Nashville, St. Louis, Atlanta, Miami, Jacksonville, San Francisco and Dallas. The Birmingham-based program was led by Dr. John R. Porterfield, who works for the UAB Department of Surgery and is chief medical officer for Informed+ Surgical.

“We empower patients and employers with objective surgical insights into the proficiency of surgeons so they can make informed choices about surgery,” he said.

According to Informed+ CEO Sally Pace, Informed+ wouldn’t have been able to expand its model to larger markets without Birmingham.

“The presence of three clinical surgeon advisers practicing in Birmingham, who are national leaders in their field, has further solidified the city’s role in shaping the program’s national strategy,” she said. “Birmingham boasts more informed surgeons participating in the program than any other city, and one of the first large employers to onboard was based in Alabama. This initial success has established Birmingham as a pivotal market for Informed+.”
