A Birmingham-based company that connects parents with on-demand child care all through the touch of an app announced plans this morning to open a community center.

Moxi, which provides child care on demand by partnering with day cares and their existing families to sell unused day care days through for a daily price, will open what the company says will be its "flagship location" this winter.

The community center will be located in Birmingham’s Lakeview neighborhood with the capacity to serve 100 children ages 12 weeks to 5 years old. The center will feature on-site gyms and co-working spaces for families as well.

Moxi was founded by Cori Fain-Forrest, who is a former child care worker and a 2021 BBJ 40 Under 40 honoree. She has more than 10 years of experience with social impact and startups and aims to address the current challenges faced by families when securing reliable but flexible child care.

The center is expected to create more than 30 jobs with competitive benefits within the first year of opening. All employees will have to undergo thorough background checks in order to ensure the safety of children and families who utilize the center, and the center will adhere to strict cleaning standards as well as offer organic food options, according to a release.

"In launching Moxi, we're not just opening a new child care center, we're bringing to life a vision where families in Birmingham and beyond can experience childcare as it should be — accessible, flexible and reliable," Fain-Forrest said. "Our aim is to provide a nurturing space where children can flourish, parents can find peace of mind and caregivers are valued. Moxi is more than a place; it's a community where every family can thrive with confidence – and our Birmingham center is just the beginning."

Moxi’s opening aims to address the current child care crisis in Alabama, where 85,000 families are struggling to find quality care.
