SiO2 Medical Products Inc. in Auburn laid off 104 employees in July.

The recent layoffs at SiO2 were the result of a refocusing of the company after the decrease in demand for Covid-19 pandemic products, according to a company spokesperson.

"SiO2 had expanded manufacturing capacity substantially in 2020-2021 to address the demand for vaccine containers and samples collection testing kits for the Covid-19 pandemic," a statement from the company said. "As the demand for Covid-19-related products decreased over the past 12 months, the company filed for Chapter 11 restructuring to protect SiO2 and its assets. As part of this restructuring, the company reduced staff."

According to the Alabama Warn List, the company reported the layoffs to the state July 31, and they started July 30.

According to the company's website, SiO2 creates and manufactures engineered primary packaging container components for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry. These containers typically take the form of syringes, vials and cartridges.

In recent years, the company has secured massive contracts, including a $64.6 million contract with the U.S. government.
