LunarLab Benefit has reorganized to become a benefit corporation.

Its customers, partners and mentees can expect to continue seeing the same UX design and product strategy services, according to a news release. What will change, however, is the company is now also focused on making a positive social and economic impact within the Birmingham community.

Benefit corporations are a relatively new company structure in the state of Alabama, following the enactment of the Alabama Benefit Corporation Act in 2021. Local trailblazers like CAVU and Sachai Tea Co. led the way in the state as some of the earliest companies to become benefit corporations. Now, LunarLab and other Alabama benefit corporations are joining the ranks of well-known national brands like Patagonia, Plum Organics, Ben & Jerry’s and Toms as benefit corporations.

“At LunarLab, we’ve always believed that we are responsible for the products we create and how they impact our community and our world," said Elizabeth Anderson, CEO and co-founder of LunarLab. "Since day one, we knew we wanted our company to focus on designing apps with an eye towards social good.”

When Anderson and co-founder Kelli Lucas founded LunarLab, having worked in the tech industry for the majority of their careers, they knew that many tech products caused social, economic and environmental harm. A lot of these products were simply never designed to be inclusive, human-centered or ethical, according to LunarLab. The company was founded with a focus on designing apps in a way that considers their impact.

To maintain accountability and increase transparency, the company will make an annual report available to the public which will detail how LunarLab is meeting its social impact goals.

“Since the very beginning of our company we have always worked to provide social benefit, and we already met the requirements to become a benefit corporation," Lucas said. "The choice was easy: to officially become a benefit corporation, almost the only thing we had to change was our name.”

LunarLab’s social impact goals are focused on increasing diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in tech. The company has created actionable goals to meet this challenge. LunarLab will use its resources to:

  • Provide pro-bono mentoring for founders from historically excluded groups
  • Donate a larger portion of profits to ethical, sustainable causes
  • Volunteer on projects aimed at creating a more inclusive, ethical and sustainable tech industry

The company is growing, and recently moving into a space in Innovation Depot. As the company grows, LunarLab expects that its social impact goals will also grow.
