A Daphne blockchain company is building a new operation in a museum in Mobile to open a Bitcoin mining operation.

Distributed Ledger Inc. is partnering with the GulfQuest Maritime Museum Board on the project. A modified shipping container will house 100 Antminer S19s, machines made by Bitmain, a company that manufactures digital currency mining servers. The machines will mine Bitcoin around the clock in an air-cooled environment to create a new revenue source for the museum.

“The hi-tech revenue source of Bitcoin mining is tied to the education, adoption and growth of the next level of encrypted and secure growth of the internet designed to provide a dramatic time and cost savings and a higher level of security for the global maritime industry,” said former Mobile mayor and current museum board of directors chair Mike Dow.

The city is leasing a portion of the museum to DLI for $1 plus 20% of the net operating revenues of the onsite operations per month. The city plans to put all of its proceeds from the partnership toward the museum.
