Facebook’s $1 billion data center in Huntsville is now up and running.
The project, which slowed in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, was first announced by the tech giant in 2018 and was originally scheduled to open last year.
The data center is already on the mark to expand with the addition of a third building. In total, the campus will have nearly 2.5 million square feet and will have employed nearly 1,200 workers at its construction peak.
Along with its property investment, Facebook said it is pouring a large amount of funding into community projects.
The company has provided a community investment fund grant of $300,000 to provide scholarships for local youth to attend the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. Applications are now also open for 2022 Facebook Community Action Grants. These grants aim to support projects that meet the needs of communities by harnessing the power of technology for community benefit, connecting people online or off and improving local STEM education.
