Why is innovation important to you and why do you think it’s important to the future of Birmingham?
Innovation is important to me because it drives progress, and I’m committed to progression in my life. Without progression, you can’t overcome obstacles and find solutions. Growing up in Birmingham, I’ve watched the city constantly innovate, progress and give back to the community. This has motivated me and the TappedIn team to pursue this company while being college students. It’s important for the city of Birmingham to continue supporting small businesses and new innovative technologies that will soon change the city we live in.
What is Birmingham doing right and what can we do to improve our innovation scene?
Birmingham is excelling in supporting small businesses and startups through initiatives like Innovation Depot, Tech Birmingham and the Sloss Tech Conference, which provide essential resources and mentorship. The city's downtown revitalization and infrastructure improvements create a lively, collaborative environment.
To improve, Birmingham could increase investment in education and training programs focused on tech and entrepreneurship and strengthen connections between universities and the business community.
How is Birmingham competing with larger innovation and entrepreneurial markets like Nashville, Austin and Atlanta? What do you think we have that they don’t?
Birmingham competes with larger innovation hubs by fostering a strong sense of community and providing substantial support for startups through initiatives like Innovation Depot. What sets Birmingham apart is its tight-knit, collaborative atmosphere and dedicated local support. This environment offers personalized mentorship and resources, ideal for entrepreneurial growth. Additionally, Birmingham's lower cost of living gives startups a significant advantage in stretching their resources.
