Why is innovation important to you and why do you think it’s important to the future of Birmingham?

As someone passionate about prototyping, innovation is central to my personal projects and client work. Birmingham, with its rich history as a hub for innovative industries like agriculture tech, manufacturing and academia, stands out as a city of cultural crossroads. I believe that Birmingham’s innovative spirit will continue to attract and nurture future entrepreneurs, providing a thriving environment for new businesses to grow.

What is Birmingham doing right and what can we do to improve our innovation scene?

Birmingham is excelling with its influx of Black-led startups and HBCU initiatives, such as Innovate Alabama and The Alabama Collective HBCU Innovation Experience program. To build on this success, I would love to see more creative technology programs that focus on immersive technologies and gaming. Additionally, establishing entrepreneur-in-residence and venture fellowship programs could provide valuable professional experience and further support the startup ecosystem.

How is Birmingham competing with larger innovation and entrepreneurial markets like Nashville, Austin and Atlanta? What do you think we have that they don’t?

Birmingham offers a unique blend of amenities and lifestyle options that cater to all types of entrepreneurs. Whether someone is seeking the vibrancy of city life or a close-knit community for raising a family, Birmingham provides a balance between these desires without sacrificing access to national parks, civil rights landmarks and a diverse population. This combination of factors makes Birmingham an appealing destination for entrepreneurs at various stages of their journey.
