Q&A with Peggy Sammon, CEO
GeneCapture was founded in 2009 and currently employs an of innovative team of 21 scientists and engineers who are developing a point of care system for multi pathogen detection and antibiotic susceptibility. Many of the staff were educated in Alabama colleges and universities.
What does innovation mean to you?
Innovation is executing elegant solutions to difficult problems -- finding ways to build value in information using clever approaches.
What ways has your company innovated and/or created meaningful impact?
GeneCapture has approached infection detection from the patient's point of view. We bring detection technology to the patient — not the lab. With that goal in mind, our team has invented several steps that allow a human sample to be tested in less than an hour and reveal the genetic signature of the pathogen. Our system must concentrate the small micro-organisms, break open the cell, release the genetic material, fragment the strands and pass them over an array of small unique probes, then analyze that information for a quick answer — all of this in less an hour for less than a co-pay.
What else do you want people to know about your company?
The GeneCapture team is pleased to be part of the innovation ecosystem in Alabama. We have benefitted from BIO Alabama, Alabama Launchpad, Innovate Alabama, the universities and colleges and from many mentors and investors who share our vision.
