Shipshape Urban Farms, founded in 2017, has five employees.

Here's an interview with Dale Speetjens, CEO and Angela Speetjens, chief science officer.

What is the most important thing your company accomplished in 2022?

We’ve accomplished many things this year but being chosen as the only Alabama company for two co-occurring accelerators was very significant. The Techstars EnergyTech accelerator sponsored by Alabama Power in Birmingham and the HudsonAlpha/gener8tor powered Agtech accelerator in Huntsville have led to partnerships in sustainability initiatives, partnerships with federal government and agtech research opportunities. Both accelerators propelled us into a different orbit than we had been on previously.

What is a short-term and long-term goal for the company in 2023?

We are looking to expand the application of our energy capture patent. We are also looking to increase our national and global reach with distributorships who share common values and goals with us.

What can Alabama do to better support startups?

We appreciate the support we’ve received whether it’s advising on international banking, shipping and INCO terms, or introducing us to international opportunities. We will always take advantage of more customer referrals.
