A Hunt Valley medical technology startup that is creating implants used in brain surgery patients has tapped a well-known New York neurosurgeon to lead its efforts to expand the use of its technology in operating rooms.

Longeviti Neuro Solutions, a startup with ties to Johns Hopkins, this month hired Dr. David Langer as its chief medical officer. Langer is the chair of neurosurgery at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City and is one of the few cerebral bypass surgeons in the country, the company said. He is also vice president of neurosurgery for Northwell Health's Western Region and professor of neurosurgery and radiology at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell.

The hire comes weeks after the company secured $6 million in new funding. The money — and addition of Langer — highlights the company's growth. The September fundraising effort follows on a $9.6 million round raised by the 25-person biomedical device firm last year.

Langer will be charged with driving the clinical strategy of the three-year-old company, which is a developer of low-profile intracranial devices used for the "functional and reconstructive needs" of brain surgery patients.

Longeviti Neuro Solutions has developed five products to date. Two of those devices, the ClearFit and InvisiShunt, have already gained clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. They are Low-profile Intracranial Devices (LIDs) that can fit into a patient’s head and allow doctors to easily swap out implantable surgical devices, without having to cut into a skull multiple times.

"We’re inspired by Dr. Langer’s incredible career and excited for the critical role he will play in advancing brain surgery and helping Longeviti bring game-changing, FDA-cleared cranial implants to more patients,” said Jesse Christopher, CEO and co-founder of Longeviti.

Langer starred in the 2020 Netflix docu-series, “Lenox Hill,” which gave audiences a look into his role as a neurosurgeon in New York City. Langer has also appeared on CNN, FOX, ABC, and CBS as well as the "Dr. Oz Show" to discuss neurosurgery.

“Throughout my career, I’ve always been interested in exploring how innovation can bring new opportunities to both physicians and patients, and Longeviti is the intersection of advanced, dynamic technology and the ability to provide a radically new patient experience,” Dr. Langer said in a statement.
