Maryland Inno is intended to showcase how innovations that begin at small companies eventually balloon into life-changing products.

That's especially true with our annual Maryland Inno Under 25 awards, which showcase five Baltimore-area innovators who are 25 years old or younger and already making an impact. Many of this year's entrepreneurs were driven by a desire to solve problems from their own lives and then bring those solutions to the wider world.

Two of this year's honorees, Derrick Day and Rebecca Rosenberg, drew from their own experiences with vision impairments to create smartphone apps that can be integrated into everyday life. The rest of the five nominees are also focusing on solving problems in health care, from sleep apnea to finding better ways to deliver medicine to the brain.

These young entrepreneurs prove that people at any age can contribute solutions to the myriad problems facing the modern world. Startup founders of any age are not the results of a lone genius, but the products of a supportive environment of accelerators, teachers and peers who help them see the potential in their ideas and turn them into a reality.

To select the Inno Under 25 honorees, the Baltimore Business Journal reached out to several local technology institutions, such as universities and startup accelerators, for suggestions.
