A company designed to help women-led businesses is the highest-ranking Austin-area company on this year's Inc. 5000, which ranks companies based on three-year revenue growth.
Coming in at No. 28 nationwide, Empowering a Billion Women is a business education network that operates an accelerator for women founders, as well as a distribution business focused on getting personal protective equipment to frontline workers during the pandemic.
The company, founded in 2013, is led by founder and CEO Ingrid Vanderveldt. She was previously the first entrepreneur-in-residence at Dell Technologies, as well as founder of the $125 million Dell Innovators Credit Fund.
Empowering a Billion Women in 2015 launched a $100 million credit fund and a software platform for women that includes business and finance tools with the goal of helping women founders expand their businesses.
The company reported 10,676% growth between 2017 and 2020. That came before the company in June launched its supply chain venture development portfolio to add to its materials, health and logistics verticals.
Overall, 111 Austin companies landed on this year's list. That's down a couple from the 113 that made it on the Inc. 5000 last year, but Empowering a Billion Women's No. 28 ranking topped the highest-ranked Austin business last year — Quality Innovation, which ranked No. 60.
To make the list, companies must have generated at least $100,000 in revenue in 2017 and then share revenue figures over three years. Inc. uses the CEO-verified revenue figures or tax returns and financial statements to develop its list.
Austin companies on the list had 184% median growth and generated $3.9 billion in revenue, and they added 8,312 jobs over the three-year span.
Real estate tech startup OJO Labs, founded in 2015, was the second-highest ranked local company, coming in at No. 49 on the nationwide list with 6,767% revenue growth.
“Over the last year, OJO Labs has seen rapid growth, earmarked by a $62.5 million funding round, two acquisitions, the launch of our agent referral network and expansion into Canada,” OJO Labs co-founder and CEO John Berkowitz said in a statement. “We know homeownership isn’t within reach for everyone and stark inequity still exists along racial and class lines today, but OJO Labs envisions a world where everyone gets to experience the physical, financial and emotional haven that home provides."
OJO Labs in June 2020 acquired Movoto, a California company that makes AI-enabled chip design and analytics solutions. In October, the company acquired Digs, a Chicago-based personal finance platform.
Book subscription startup Literati was the No. 3 local company on the list at No. 77 overall, with 4,897% growth. Tea subscription startup Sips By landed at No. 79 on the list, and AdOutreach landed at No. 87. No other local companies were in the top 100.
