Austin continues to top rankings of where technology talent is moving in the United States.

The Austin metro ranked No. 1 in the nation for the highest net migration of tech workers between May 2020 and April 2021, according to research supplied by LinkedIn. This covers all workers at software and IT companies, not just technical staff.

The Texas capital was followed by Nashville; Charlotte, North Carolina; Jacksonville, Florida; and Denver. Dallas came in at No. 9.

The data was based on net migration per 10,000 existing workers with at least 2,000 gross flows. Austin saw net inflows per 10,000 technology workers of nearly 217.

San Francisco was at the bottom of the list of 35 metros, with net outflow of 80.44. Boston saw net outflow of 54.45 and Chicago was at 53.41.

Austin and the rest of Texas have been a magnet for both tech workers and companies seeking lower costs during the pandemic. Austin Business Journal has tracked at least 24 headquarters that have been set up in the city since the start of the year.

The top ranking for Austin follows the city's No. 1 status among all professionals on the move, according to data released late last year. That showed that for every professional who moved out of the Austin area from April to October last year, 1.53 people arrived. In that analysis, Phoenix came in second, followed by Nashville, Tampa and Jacksonville.
