Rev.com plans Austin expansion, 130 new jobs this year

Company provides speech-to-text tech

Technology company Rev.com Inc. is expanding its presence in Central Texas and plans to double its current employee count by the end of this year.

The company, which creates speech-to-text services, plans to add another 130 jobs in its engineering, product, marketing and sales departments in 2021, according to a May 24 announcement from Opportunity Austin, the economic development initiative of the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce. The bulk of the hires are expected to be in Austin.

Rev already has roughly 130 employees in Austin and a downtown office at Hartland Plaza off West Sixth Street, where it expanded its lease to about 14,500 square feet. The company splits its headquarters between Austin and San Francisco. It has raised $33 million, according to Crunchbase.

Companies continue to pick Austin for expansions and relocations because of the area's access to talent, business-friendly environment and bustling tech scene. As of April, more than 70 companies pledged to create nearly 12,000 jobs through expansions or relocations in the metro, according to a tally by Opportunity Austin. The metro is already outpacing last year's record-breaking 22,114 jobs announced.

“Rev established its second headquarters in Austin years ago because of the city's reputation for a great quality of life,” CEO Jason Chicola said in a statement. “Being able to continue to grow even amidst a pandemic is a testament to Austin's spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship. We look forward to welcoming even more of the region's vast talent pool to Rev as we 'rev up' for growth.”

The company's automatic speech recognition technology is used by both customers seeking transcription services and software developers looking to build speech recognition in other applications and services. This allows businesses to make their audio and video content accessible and searchable, according to the announcement.

“As the number one speech-to-text service in the world, Rev is a part of a growing technology sector in Austin featuring companies with innovative leaders working with AI to find solutions for businesses and individuals alike," Charisse Bodisch, senior vice president of economic development for the Austin Chamber, said in a statement. “We welcome Rev’s continued growth in the Austin region."
