Silicon Valley chip startup Flex Logix expanding to Austin

Flex Logix Technologies Inc. is opening an Austin office.

The Mountain View, Calif.-based chip technology company has 50 total employees, including five in Austin. That includes two of the company’s six vice presidents. Flex Logix said via email it plans to grow to 100 people within a year, with 25 to 30 new faces in Austin. The company said it hasn’t yet opened an office here, but expects to do so in the third quarter.

The Austin expansion news comes about a month after Flex Logix announced it had raised a $55 million round led by Mithril Capital Management, a one-time San Francisco Bay Area firm co-founded by Peter Thiel that moved to Austin in 2018. Flex Logix has now raised a total of $82 million in equity funding. The startup has developed an artificial intelligence edge inference accelerator — it uses software and hardware to boost AI capabilities in products.

While Flex Logix highlighted its Austin office, it had noted last month it was opening a design center here. The company also said April 26 it has hired Brad Feller as chief financial officer and Charlie Roth as vice president of inference hardware. Roth will be based in Austin.

Flex joins a wave of California technology companies opening offices or relocating headquarters to our growing tech hub. Venture-backed startups such as TripActions Inc. and Airtable have turned to the Texas capital for satellite offices in recent months. And so far this year, Austin Business Journal has chronicled more than 20 HQ relocations to the area, including companies from California such as software makers Markaaz Inc. and NinjaRMM LLC.
