Sourdough and election results: What Austin and the nation Googled in 2020

The top trending terms on Google's search engine in 2020 won't surprise you -- election results, coronavirus and Kobe Bryant. It was the same when you drill down to what Texans were searching for, and the same was true in Austin.

The city's top Google Shopping searches are also a reflection of our strange times: face mask, hand sanitizer, PS5, toilet paper and N95 mask were the top queries.

In retrospect, 2019 seems so trivial. Last year, the top trending search topics in Austin were 2020, 2019 and BMW. Meanwhile, the trending search queries in Austin were about Disney Plus, "Avengers: Endgame" and actor Jussie Smollett.

But some of the most revealing trends in Google's Year in Search are on a global scale.

For example, in June more people were searching for "how to be anti-racist" than were searching for "how to be a millionaire." Throughout the year, "how to be an ally" was searched more than "how to be an influencer." And, compared to 2019, searches for supporting small businesses doubled.

The top trending people in the U.S. this year were Joe Biden and Kim Jong Un, while "Tiger King" and "Parasite" topped the list of trending TV shows and movies, respectively.

Now, here's a breakdown of more search trends from this year's report:
