Austin was largely a government and university city decades ago. But tech has grown to become one of the city's economic cornerstones, largely supporting the city's rapid growth.
Austin stands out from most of its metropolitan peers in this respect.
A new report by CompTIA, a large nonprofit representing the IT industry, shows that Austin ranks No. 4 in the nation when it comes to the impact its tech sector has as a percent of the overall local economy.
The analysis showed 24% of the Austin's local economy is attributable to tech employment. That puts it behind only San Jose (58%), San Francisco (27%) and Seattle (26%).
Meanwhile, Austin ranked No. 10 for net tech job gains -- with 7,131 jobs gained between 2018 and 2019.
The top positions were in software and web development, systems and cybersecurity analysts and network architects and admins. Meanwhile, the data showed Austin's median tech salary is $88,372, which is 91% higher than the overall median wage in Austin.
“While the largest job gains are associated with the states with a significant tech presence, the fact that most states experienced tech employment job gains speaks to the broad-based impact of technology across the nation,” the report said.
