Austin's tech scene is booming, and so are its salaries, according to a new report by careers site Hired.com.

Average salaries for tech workers, which includes engineers, product managers, data scientists, product designers and more, increased to $125,000 in 2018. That's up 6% from 2017, when the average was $118,000, and way up from 2015, when the average was $108,000.

That puts Austin in 5th place. San Francisco led with $145,000, followed by Seattle ($138,000), New York ($133,000) and Boston ($127,000). Austin was just ahead of Washington, D.C., which averaged $123,000.

While the rising wages are good news for tech workers, there's still a major disparity in how much women are paid, the report shows. It says that 60% of the time, men are offered higher salaries for the same jobs at the same companies. And, on average, women are offered 3% less pay than men for the same roles.

Meanwhile, when looking at similar roles, women are offered 6% less.

"While salary compensation is still the most important thing Austin candidates look for, they also desire a balanced package that includes unique benefits and perks," the report says. "And like most cities where commutes are challenging, they relish the opportunity to work remotely and have a flexible working environment."

The report said:

  • 31% of tech workers consider the flexibility to work remotely as one of the most important factors when job searching.
  • 59% of candidates have taken a recruiter call because the company has showcased benefits and perks.
  • 87% of tech workers would leave their job for another one with a higher base salary.

And, another interesting stat: 75% in Austin tech workers say they would be willing to work 100% remotely (compared to only 55% in San Francisco).

Finally, the report noted the most admired companies in Austin. They were, in the following order:

  1. Indeed
  2. Whole Foods
  3. HomeAway
  4. Dell
  5. National Instruments
  6. Silicon Labs
  7. GoDaddy
  8. RetailMeNot
  9. WP Engine
  10. SolarWinds
