A rising tide lifts all boats. Or so the saying goes.
But is the local tech ecosystem really a tide? Or is it more of a wave that lifts some boats and sends others quietly rocking at the same level?
Comparably, the online careers and compensation comparison site, dug into its data covering nearly 22,000 employee salaries of non technical employees working at tech businesses in the U.S. during the past year to find out.
Nationwide, the analysis found sales managers had the highest salaries among the non-tech tribe with an average salary of $117,344. Business development manager, sales representative and human resources manager positions all also averaged more than $100,000, when considering base pay and bonuses.
The lowest three positions in the salary analysis were accountants ($63,393), social media managers ($63,309) and office managers ($58,884).
But one of the most striking findings was that men had higher average pay and bonuses across all of the 15 positions analyzed -- and often by wide margins. Consider that male sales managers averaged $124,022 compared to women in the same job category making $92,185. Public relations managers and social media managers had the closest gaps -- with men making less than $1,000 more per year on average.
The analysis also split things up by ethnicity, showing that those identified as Asian or Pacific Islander tended to have the highest salaries (followed closely by Caucasians) in all jobs except PR manager, where African Americans had the highest average.
Unsurprisingly, the Bay Area topped the list geographically, with the highest average salaries across all roles except PR manager (Austin), sales rep (Washington, D.C.) and business development manager (Seattle).
