For some, on the job bliss means having a cool boss, a flexible work schedule and no shortage of cold brew coffee. For others, it's all about a big paycheck, a challenging opportunity and a pathway to the top.
Everyone is a little different. But when careers site Indeed analyzed ratings, reviews and job opening histories of America's large businesses over the last two years, it found that tech companies and airlines seems to have dialed in employee happiness best.
Facebook, Southwest Airlines and Salesforce were the top three places to work in the U.S. in Indeed's latest top-rated workplaces list.
Here in Austin, Keller Williams, a real estate giant that has poured huge investments into its growing technology buildout, ranked No. 1.
Retail giant H-E-B, which has also made big tech investments, ranked second, followed by Facebook, Microsoft and Apple, according to Indeed's new rankings for Austin.
Interestingly, Keller Williams, Bazaarvoice (ranked No. 10) and Chuy's Mexican restaurant (ranked No. 13) were the only Austin-based businesses on Austin's best workplaces list. The majority are headquartered in California, New York or Chicago.
Indeed's rankings use a proprietary algorithm to blend reviews, ratings, job postings and other criteria.
Houston is the only other Texas city Indeed broke down in its workplace rankings. There, the top workplaces were SAP, Microsoft, McCarthy Building Co., Camden Property Trust and Discount Tire.
Of course, Indeed's ranking is just one of several that aim to help people find the best workplaces.
The Austin Business Journal's most recent best places to work contest found Realty Austin was the top large business to work at, followed by Sailpoint and Parsley Energy. Meanwhile, Glassdoor's rankings put Facebook on top in Austin, followed by Keller Williams and H-E-B.
