Torchy's Tacos and Cheer Up Charlies Among Lyft’s Top Austin Destinations in 2017 [Report]

Lyft, the San Francisco-based ride-hailing company, crunched the numbers on all the rides it provided in Austin so far in 2017.

This is part of Lyft's annual “Lyftie” awards, which are done in several markets across the country.

Here’s a look at the winners in Austin:

Most Visited Restaurant: Torchy's Tacos

Back in 2015, Stubb's won in the restaurant category. But we suspected that Stubb's concert venue out back might have been a driving factor. Torchy's, on the other hand, is a no-brainer. The taco joint, which has a ton of locations across the city, has become one of Austin's most popular taco stop -- for tourists and locals alike.

Most Visited Bar: Cheer Up Charlies

DJs, live bands, LGBTQ-friendly atmosphere and plenty of patio seating make Cheer Up Charlies a hot spot on Red River. And its location near Mohawk and Stubb's make it a nice meeting place for before or after a concert at one of those larger venues. Back in 2015, the last time Lyft had awards in Austin, The Dogwood on West 6th Street won the bar category.

Most Visited Event Space: Alamo Drafthouse

Sorry folks, no big surprises here either. While the Austin Convention Center is a hot drop off spot during SXSW and other big conferences, it can hardly match the six multi-screen dinner and drinks theaters the Alamo has in Austin. In 2015, we were surprised to see that Barbarella won the events space award -- because it's considered a nightclub by most of us.

Only in Austin: Bangers Beer Garden

Bangers is perhaps the most well-known hot spot on Rainey Street, and its huge outdoor seating area, endless beers and sausage and frequent special events and concerts make it an awesome spot to hang out with friends. In 2015, more riders just said Rainey Street, and the street itself won the "only in Austin" category.

Trending Destination: Native Hostel Bar and Kitchen

When you think about a trending destination, a hostel may not come to mind. But Native has blended lovely wood decor with tasty drinks and nice bites to make it a hotspot for small events, happy hour meetups and evening drinks.

Most Visited University: University of Texas

While Austin has several fine universities, none are anywhere near as large as the 40 Acres. Let's hope they create a new category to replace this one next year because it doesn't seem like any other universities have the enrollment to compete.

Lyft is promoting its Lyftie awards by offering 17 percent off rides to any winning locations from Dec. 6-10. It's worth noting that most of those winning locations are nearby other popular spots, too.
