Survey: Techies Prefer These Mid-Sized Austin Companies to Giants Like Dell

Techies are more excited about the prospect of working for some of Austin's mid-sized companies than its tech giants, a new survey found.

That's based on a survey by Hired, a job searching marketplace, of 2,349 tech workers who were given a list of top local companies. The respondents were asked about their level of interest in the companies, and they had a chance to write in startups not on the list.

In Austin, one of Hired's chief competitors, Indeed, ranked No. 1. (Hired itself is based in San Francisco, so it wouldn't have been on the initial list of Austin companies.)

HomeAway and RetailMeNot ranked No. 2 and No. 3, respectively. Dell, meanwhile, the largest and most well-known of Austin area tech companies, ranked No. 10. Perhaps the smallest company to rank in the top 10 was uShip, at No. 7.

Here's the full list:

  1. Indeed
  2. HomeAway
  3. RetailMeNot
  4. Silicon Labs
  5. SolarWinds
  6. Bazaarvoice
  7. uShip
  8. WP Engine
  9. Spredfast
  10. Dell

Hired's report says that Austin workers are team players, noting the team surrounding them as a top factor in their preference. It also showed Austin is one of the markets in which the most survey respondents say they'd like to work remotely.

And more than half said they would consider working outside of Austin. Overall, Denver was the top choice for relocation.

"Ultimately, companies with strong cultural appeal who offer not only competitive compensation, but also growth opportunities should be able to compete with anyone," the report says.

The top 10 companies on the national list represent some of the biggest brands in tech -- although there are noticeable absences, such as Apple, Amazon and Uber. Of those top national brands, several have large offices in Austin, including Google, Atlassian and Facebook.
