HomeAway was among the first tech big companies to commit to a large office at The Domain. Now, following its acquisition by Expedia, HomeAway says it's doubling down on The Domain by signing a lease on 315,000 square feet of office space in a 16-story office tower.
HomeAway plans to move into the building in the first quarter of 2019. So, if you, like I, are a bit challenged by envision what 315,000 square feet looks like, here's a hint: The space will be able to accommodate 2,000-plus employees. It will have bike storage, workout space, showers, lockers, balcony space, an outdoor lawn, and it's a simple stroll away from Whole Foods Market and other Domain shops.
And, while many companies contract after an acquisition, HomeAway has just kept growing, adding about 50 percent more tech workers since the Expedia paid $3.9 billion to acquire Austin-born HomeAway in 2015.
"Austin employees are critical to our global growth and success,” HomeAway President John Kim, said in a news release. “Our transition from a sales-driven advertising platform to a tech-driven e-commerce business is already paying off, as our owners and property managers generated $2.7 billion in gross bookings during the first quarter of 2017, nearly 50 percent more vacation rental gross bookings compared to the same time last year."
TIER REIT, a Dallas-based developer, is the owner and developer of the building.
This would be HomeAway's sixth office space in Austin. And it already has a 5-story, 114,665-square-foot office building at The Domain that has space for 774 employees, including cross-departmental teams from finance, human resources, customer experience, product and development.
“As a global company headquartered in Austin and as the largest and fastest growing consumer tech company based in our hometown, we are well poised to attract the very best talent,” Kim said. “We’re already hiring at a rapid rate across all disciplines worldwide, and our new offices will help us continue to grow, especially as we look for talented designers, engineers and data scientists.”
