Austin startups of all kinds are booming.

For the second year in a row, Austin was ranked as the No. 2 city in the nation for growing a new business, according to a well-respected study.

The Kauffman Index of Growth Entrepreneurship draws on a variety of data and looks at the rate of headcount and revenue growth in startups that are one to five years old -- as well as later stage expansions. It showed Washington D.C. is the only city exceeding Austin in terms of expanding startups.

The findings, once again this year, contrast sharply with the perception that Silicon Valley, Boston and New York are generating more small business growth. In this analysis, Columbus, Ohio, Nashville and Atlanta look like up and comers in the entrepreneurial world. But that's not to say traditional startup hubs are far behind.

Here are the top 20 cities ranked in the Kauffman report.

It's not all good news in Austin. We ranked 10th when it came to acquisitions, IPOs and other exits for venture-backed startups.

The U.S. logged 800-plus exits in 2017, the report showed. San Francisco, New York and San Jose dominated. Austin fell behind several big cities, like Philadelphia, in that ranking.

Last year, Austin the got the No. 1 ranking in the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation’s startup index, which measures new business activity. It was also No. 1 in the CNBC Metro 20.
