Austin-Based Maker of 'Call of Duty' and 'Halo' Lands $5M Investment

Certain Affinity, the Austin-based co-developer of the "Call of Duty" and "Halo" series video games, has raised $5 million of equity funding from a single investor, a new federal filing shows.

This appears to be the first time the company has raised equity funding -- at least under the name Certain Affinity, LLC.

The company, perhaps the oldest, largest and most successful game maker in Austin, has generated more than $100M in revenue in the past 10-plus years. And it has recently moved to a new headquarters in north-central Austin. It has 121 people full-time employees, and, earlier this year as part of a tax incentive from the city, it said it has plans to hire 180 more by 2020. It currently has 10 jobs listed on its website.

Certain Affinity was founded in 2006 by Max Hoberman, a 10-year veteran of Bungie who helped launch the Halo franchise. The company was the winner of the Austin Chamber of Commerce's A-List award this year and was a judge's choice winner at Austin Inno's Austin Fest, which honored the city's coolest companies.

Company executives weren't immediately available for comment on the funding.
