Atlanta startup Springbot made its first acquisition to expand its e-commerce marketing platform for small and mid-sized businesses.

Springbot acquired fellow Atlanta startup Matcha, which specializes in content marketing. Financial details were not released.

Springbot CEO Brooks Robinson said Matcha’s full team and customers will be integrated with Springbot’s, upping the company’s workforce to more than 100.

“Our core values align very well with Matcha’s,” Robinson said. “A focus on team and collaboration. A focus on working with people we like, trust and respect. And a real focus on the customer and how we turn a customer into a fan.”

Springbot’s goal is to become an all-in-one e-commerce marketing platform for small businesses. Its offerings already includes marketing channels such as email, social media and advertisements. Matcha’s expertise in creating blogs for its customers will allow Springbot to add content marketing to its platform.

"The idea is to marry content with different distribution channels,” Matcha CEO Fynn Glover said. “I think that’s particularly compelling in the world of e-commerce because it’ll allow small businesses to achieve some really interesting things in how they personalize communication to customers.”

Robinson said Springbot hopes to give small businesses the same e-commerce marketing tools to compete with businesses. For example, the company recently added SMS marketing features for their customers.

In the next year, Robinson said Springbot will look toward expanding its platform even further with more acquisitions as opportunities arise.

Springbot started in 2012 and came out of Georgia Tech’s ATDC incubator. Robinson said the company has been “really happy to call Atlanta home and get so much support from the Atlanta community.”

It has $31 million worth of institutional investments from Atlanta firms such as TechOperators, TTV Capital and TechSquare Labs.

Matcha relocated to Atlanta from Chattanooga in 2018 after a Series A round led by TechOperators and rebranded from its original launch as RootsRated.com, which was initially an outdoor travel publishing site.

“We had so many customers asking us to create content for them that I felt there was a really great opportunity to pivot from publishing to content marketing software,” Glover said.

Glover said the genesis for the acquisition came during a discussion earlier this year with Robinson about the future of e-commerce and marketing. The percentage of retail that's moved online because of the pandemic has grown dramatically, Robinson said, which is indicative of a change in consumer behavior in general.

With this e-commerce burst, Springbot taps into its customer base to see what resources they need, and plan to continue to adjust and expand its platform.
