JUMP, a pedal-assist bike and e-scooter company owned by Uber, officially launched its e-scooters in Atlanta today.
According to company representatives, the e-scooters are another transportation option for those using the Uber app, which will now serve as a one-stop-shop for car, e-scooter and e-bike rides in the future. The company will only launch a fleet of e-scooters in Atlanta Wednesday, with e-bikes to launch at a later date.
“Riders have told us they like having multiple transportation options available within a single app to fit their various needs,” Jen Shepherd, JUMP General Manager for the Southeast said in a statement. “Reliability, convenience and choice have long been key attributes of the Uber platform. With those features in mind, we’re excited to now offer access to electric scooters at the push of a button.”
JUMP scooters will cost $1 to "unlock" and an additional 10 cents per minute afterward.
"To use a JUMP scooter, you can reserve via the Uber app or by walking up to an available scooter and scanning the QR code to unlock," the company said in a news release. "When using the app, tap the mode switch at the top of your home screen, and select Scooter. Atlantans also have the option to unlock a Lime scooter right in the Uber app."
JUMP launched its dockless electric bike share system in the United States in 2017, followed by the launch of its e-scooters this fall. After acquiring JUMP in May, Uber has also partnered with Lime’s dockless scooters. The company announced in July it had participated in a $335 million funding round with the San Fransisco-based startup and planned to promote the dockless scooters in Uber’s app. Uber made a similar investment into JUMP before acquiring it for more than $100 million.
JUMP e-scooters are available in Los Angeles and Austin, and their pedal assist bikes are available in a dozen cities. The company appears to be launching in several other cities, with a European expansion, according to Business Insider, just ahead of Uber's planned IPO next year.
"We look forward to next launching JUMP e-bikes in the city, giving Atlantans yet another transportation option that bridges the gap between traditional bikes and cars," Shepherd said.
