Porsche Car North America is bringing augmented reality to car repairs across the country this week.
Tech Live Look will connect technicians from 189 dealers in the U.S. to remote experts based in Atlanta via smart-glasses, according to a news release. The live interaction will reportedly shorten service on cars by up to 40 percent.
Using AR goggles, Porsche tech managers will be able to see what the mechanic is seeing and provide feedback. Porsche will be utilizing ODG (Osterhout Design Group) R-7 smart-glasses and the AiR Enterprise software platform from Atheer, Inc., two California-based companies.
"Tech Live Look is the kind of digital innovation Porsche values because it raises the quality of the customer experience," Klaus Zellmer, president and CEO of PCNA said in a statement. "By solving issues faster, our dealer partners can get their customers back into cars with less disruption. And our overall service quality increases as we share expertise more efficiently between our experts and dealer technicians."
Via high-definition live video from the glasses, the support team in Atlanta sees exactly what any technician at a dealership is seeing. The expert can project step-by-step technical bulletins and drawings onto the display inside the technician's glasses, as well as take screen shots and enlarge images for better visibility. The technician will be able open and view documents while working hands-free on the car, according to the press release.
The platform will go live at three Porsche dealers this week, with the goal of having 75 of 189 U.S. Porsche dealers online by the end of the year. The remaining dealerships will be onboarded by 2019.
