Cybersecurity firm DefenseStorm raised a $12 million Series B round to expand its platform.

The round was led by Georgian, a Toronto, Canada-based fintech firm that invests in high-growth software companies. Atlanta-based TTV Capital also participated. DefenseStorm also received $7 million in growth capital financing from CIBC Innovation Banking.

DefenseStorm focuses on cybersecurity solutions for community banks and credit unions. CEO Steve Soukup said the funds will be used to enhance the company’s artificial intelligence capabilities and expand the uses of its platform. For example, Soukup said DefenseStorm is moving to combat fraud in real time with its CyberFraud addition, which will complement the platform’s security and compliance features.

Georgian also led DefenseStorm’s $15 million Series A funding round. Soukup said Georgian’s expertise in applied AI makes the firm a great partner.

“They have market teams that have worked really closely with our engineering teams to identify some use cases that we think can bring real efficiency and scale, not only to DefenseStorm, but also to our clients in terms of automating some of the tasks associated with cybersecurity,” Soukup said.

DefenseStorm has about 80 clients that use its platform, and Soukup said he hopes larger banks and credit unions also start using DefenseStorm.

The COVID-19 pandemic increased possible cybersecurity problems as employees of banks and credit unions started working from home, Soukup said, and the company had record-breaking numbers for signing up new clients in the middle of the year.

“COVID shined a floodlight on a problem that’s always been there, but the pandemic made it a little more acute and a little more urgent to address,” Soukup said.

DefenseStorm started seven years ago and was previously based in Seattle but has since moved to Alpharetta. Soukup said Atlanta’s prolific financial services industry and universities make it a great headquarters.

Soukup doesn’t anticipate raising another round until 2022.
