Sandia National Laboratories 2022 Economic Impact Report released today shows its spending with New Mexico small businesses has continued to rise over the past three years.

According to the report, Sandia's overall subcontract-related payments topped $1.5 billion in fiscal year 2022, which ended Sept. 30. About 28% of that figure — nearly $420 million — went to New Mexico-based small businesses. In 2021, that New Mexico figure was $360 million.

"Small businesses promote innovation and help us bring to the marketplace technologies that improve people's lives," Sandia National Laboratories Director James S. Peery, Ph.D., said in the 2022 Economic Impact Report. "Sandia is committed to partnering with and building relationships with highly qualified small businesses to spur economic growth in New Mexico and across the country."

According to the report, Sandia's total procurement impact in New Mexico totaled $491 million. This total procurement impact in New Mexico is higher than the lab's 2020 and 2021 numbers but falls short of its 2019 total procurement impact, which was a reported $521 million.

The lab reported total expenditures of just over $4.2 billion in fiscal year 2022. That's a 7.4% increase in total expenditures when compared to the fiscal year 2021, according to the report.

And Sandia surpassed 15,000 total employees in 2022, up from 14,921 employees in 2021. Of the 15,533 total employees reported in fiscal year 2022, 12,581 are located in New Mexico at the lab's Albuquerque office.

Scott Aeilts, associate labs director in mission services at Sandia National Laboratories, presented the lab's report at an Economic Forum of Albuquerque breakfast today. He was joined by Laura Lovato, procurement manager at Sandia, who spoke about the lab's small business spending.

The report was published by Sandia's Supply Chain Risk Management and Supplier Diversity Department.

Correction/Clarification
A previous version of this article incorrectly stated that Sandia National Laboratories' subcontract spending with New Mexico small businesses had decreased. The article has been updated to reflect the correct information.
