An advanced technology research company in Albuquerque that's experienced fast growth over past couple of years recently landed a couple of large contracts with the U.S. military.

Verus Research announced it received two research contracts in late October. The two contracts combine to provide the Albuquerque company with nearly $2 million.

One is with the U.S. Navy's Strategic Systems Programs (SSP) office, which awarded Verus Research an 18-month, $1.2 million contract. The money will go toward Verus' development of sustained high-power plasma switches and antennas, according to the company's website.

The other contract is with the Air Force Research Laboratory. The lab, which handles some of its operations at Kirtland Air Force Base just south of Albuquerque, awarded Verus a two-year, $750,000 contract for developing an aerospace antenna prototype to mitigate high-energy electrons, according to Verus' website.

Verus couldn't be reached for comment regarding the two contracts by the time of publishing.

Both contracts are part of the U.S. Small Business Administration's small business innovative research program, which gives money to private, for-profit companies to promote technological innovation and meet federal research and development needs, according to the programs' website.

Founded in 2014, Verus has been a fixture on Business First's Fastest Growing companies lists. It has its headquarters at 6100 Uptown Blvd NE, Suite 260, and it opened a research facility in Northeast Albuquerque last spring. In addition to the Navy's Strategic Systems Programs office and the Air Force Research Laboratory, some of Verus' other large customers include Lockheed Martin, Raytheon Technologies and NASA.

The company's research services are in three areas. One is high-power systems, including directed energy, systems engineering and applied nuclear research. Another includes sensors and instrumentation, such as applied electronics, electronic warfare, space and autonomy. It also completes research in software development and applications.
