Ethos Broadband announced it will bring fiber internet to 2,955 homes in Sierra County with the help of a New Mexico program.
Through the New Mexico Office of Broadband Access and Expansion’s Connect New Mexico Pilot Program, the state is awarding $8.4 million while Ethos will contribute $3.6 million and an additional $2.3 million of equipment and services.
Combined, the effort represents a $14.5 million investment.
Ethos said in a news release it secured the money following an application review and evaluation based on numerous factors including community support, economic efficiency and project readiness.
"The first wave of Connect New Mexico Pilot Program grants will expand broadband infrastructure to bring resources to communities that need it most, laying a foundation for continued economic growth," Office of Broadband Access and Expansion Director Kelly Schlegel said in a statement.
In 2020, Ethos received a USDA broadband grant that allowed it to deploy a fiber system to over 1,500 homes in rural Sierra County. That grant was worth $6.1 million and was partially matched by a state contribution of $2.2 million.
Ethos Broadband is a division of New Mexico-based Sacred Wind Communications, which is a subsidiary of Sacred Wind Enterprises. Earlier this month, Colorado-based broadband company Commnet Broadband announced it received regulatory approval to complete its acquisition of Sacred Wind Enterprises.
