Eight years ago, Kady Cravens said she found herself at the start of a budding career.

Back then, Cravens told Albuquerque Business First, she started working as a janitor at cannabis provider Preferred Organic Therapy in Denver. That experience was followed by a range of other positions including harvest and packaging manager and eventually compliance director, according to the company.

“I have a true passion for the plant,” Cravens said in an interview.

Today, she’s putting her knowledge to use in a different way with BuildMySOP. Through the Albuquerque-based company, Cravens advises cannabis companies on standard operating procedures (SOPs) — step-by-step instructions for helping businesses carry out their operations. These can help employees and companies abide by rules and regulations.

“In the cannabis industry… there’s constant regulatory changes,” Cravens said.

Her company officially launched in February 2021.

“In the next two years, I’d like to see us going into all legal states.”

With experience in cannabis inspection on staff, Cravens said the startup is trying to help fill the role of a compliance director. It offers standardized SOP templates as well as customized options at a cost of $5,000 and $20,000. The company also offers follow-on subscriptions for accessing templates after an initial 30-day period.

BuildMySOP has six employees and has been in business for one year while turning about $50,000 in profit, according to Cravens. Sandia Botanicals, a nonprofit medical cannabis provider with locations in Albuquerque and Las Cruces, uses BuildMySOP's platform, she said.

And on Feb. 21, Cravens said it landed a deal with Long Play Inc., which oversees Willie Nelson’s Willie's Reserve and Kayak brands. A request for comment from Willie's Reserve went unreturned.

The company is debt-free, according to Cravens, and hopes to make $100,000 in profit this year.
