Technology from digital health care company Twistle in Albuquerque will be used to support services related to pregnancy and childbirth.

According to a release from the company, Rural OB Access & Maternal Services (ROAMS), a four-year grant from the federal Health Resources and Services Administration, is using Twistle to care for patients in Taos, Colfax, Union, Harding and Mora counties. Twistle offers patient engagement platform that supports text, voice response and other modes of communication.

"With Twistle, we connect women directly to their care teams through their mobile phones or a tablet. This technology allows us to reach women wherever they are. We are aiming to improve access, reduce long travel to clinics/specialty care and enhance detection of antepartum and postpartum problems. We know that early intervention prevents a lot of complications," said Dr. Timothy Brininger, medical director of ROAMS, in a prepared statement.

"Preventing unnecessary travel, especially for specialty care, is key to the success of this program," he added.

Twistle's platform will provide patients with access to care plan information, educational materials and appointment reminders, the release says. Patients can also engage with health care providers on the platform.

The announcement comes two months after it was disclosed Twistle was being purchased in one of the most valuable acquisition deals for a New Mexico company in recent memory. In June, publicly-traded data analytics company Health Catalyst disclosed it would acquire all equity interests in Twistle for about $57.5 million in cash and $47 million in Health Catalyst common stock, plus a potential additional payout of as much as $65 million based on certain targets.

An investor presentation from Utah-based Health Catalyst said the acquisition of Twistle is important as health care organizations optimize care delivery in virtual settings. The company planned to pair Twistle's clinical workflow and patient engagement platform with one of its own offerings to enable a solution for addressing population health, Business First reported.

At the time its acquisition was announced, Twistle reportedly had more than 40 customers, mainly health systems, with a 35% anticipated revenue growth rate, according to the investor presentation.
