Infinity Systems Engineering, a Colorado company focusing on space projects, plans to open a new office in Albuquerque later this year. Several potential customers are in Albuquerque, including the Space Rapid Capabilities Office, the Air Force Research Laboratory and the Space and Missile Systems Center at Kirtland Air Force Base.

Various lines of opportunity are driving Infinity Systems Engineering to expand to Albuquerque. The Colorado company, which focuses on space projects, plans to open a new office in town later this year, according to Daniel Jaworowski, who took over as president of the firm in September.

“Part of my vision really is to establish a presence where our customers are,” Jaworowski said of the company, headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Infinity Systems Engineering provides expertise in space operations and software, systems and test engineering, according to its website. Several potential customers are in Albuquerque, including the Space Rapid Capabilities Office, the Air Force Research Laboratory and the Space and Missile Systems Center at Kirtland Air Force Base.

"Those 3 entities, all operating in the domain we kind of grew up in, is really kind of the draw for us," Jaworowski said.

The company also provides services to "all the major" prime contractors, according to Jaworowski. Several large government contractors have a presence here, though some have reduced their New Mexico workforces in recent years. They include Honeywell Federal Manufacturing & Technologies, which works with the National Nuclear Security Administration, and Northrop Grumman.

Many other smaller engineering companies, including at least one that spun off from one of the big players, are based locally.

"There’s a lot of federal buying taking place in Albuquerque," Jaworowski said. Statewide, the Department of Defense awarded $1.76 billion worth of contracts in New Mexico during the previous 12 months. During that time frame, the DOD awarded Infinity Systems about $1.6 million worth of work, according to government data.

The company wants to open the new office the end of March, but the timeline will depend on the state's Covid-19 restrictions. Currently, the state is operating under a three-tier system to determine how strict restrictions will be in each county. Bernalillo County is in the yellow tier, which allows businesses here to have higher occupancy limits, Business First reported.

Infinity Systems Engineering employs about 200 nationwide, with the vast majority located in Colorado. The new office will start out small, at about two or three employees, but the firm's presence will grow as the company lands more work in the area, according to Jaworowski. The expansion comes after a year of growth, he added, unable to disclose the company's revenue.
